Parent Express for 24-May-2010

I hope spring is in full swing by now in your part of the country. It sure is here in the Pacific Northwest. Recently at one of our events, Dr. Jane Healy, whose new book is Different Learners, told us she "loved our man-eating rhodies." Yes, our flowers are often big—a great side-effect of all that rain. In the midst of all of spring's new growth, you may find yourself madly cleaning out closets, or having to repress the urge to do so because you are madly attending your child's last school functions or scheduling summer's baseball or swimming practices.

Running around, cleaning up messes and basically enjoying the renewed energy that comes with this season can be a lot of fun, especially with more daylight to play in. Because of all the new-found energy, I always think of spring as a time to transform—to change and adjust on deep levels. I hope the article below helps to remind you of ways to use this season for any transformations of your choosing—both inward and outward!

Happy Spring! Happy Transformations!

Gloria DeGaetano, Founder and CEO

"I have been thinking for some time, since starting my PCI journey, that you have developed an absolutely excellent course. Recently I talked with a colleague and the conversation really solidified for me how much of your heart and soul comes through the curriculum, and how because you put your heart and soul into it, it inspires me to put my own heart and soul into it. That is an even bigger gift than the materials themselves, which honestly I find so thought provoking, affirming and interesting that my hands often tingle as I digest it all. So, THANK YOU. This is changing my life."

Springtime: Time to Transform

Gloria Degaetano

by Gloria DeGaetano,
Founder and CEO, Parent Coaching Institute

The energy of springtime is the energy of movement. When I think of transforming self or helping to transform declining conditions on our planet, I think of forward movement—one small step at a time, usually. The pace we go doesn't matter as much as the "how" we do what we are moved to do. For it is in the "how" that we catalyze good in our everyday lives for the people we touch. The ripple effect moves out from there. The pace at which it moves out can often astound when the "how" is in alignment with three key qualities.

These qualities define characteristics of internal states that shepherd our constructive actions, imbuing them with far-reaching results, making the good we do more sustainable. Here is a thumb-nail synthesis of each quality. By focusing on them and inviting them to grow within us, we bring more light to ourselves and to our world.

Integrity

In a thought-provoking article titled, "Awakening to the Highest Reaches of Integrity," in the Vision in Action Journal, Yasuhiko Genku Kimura defines "integrity" on three levels:

"Integrity means being true to one's principles, one's word, and one's self, and true integrity involves the total accord between these three levels of being true. People who can sustain their commitment are those who say, "I am committed to making X happen," and then follow through with the necessary stages of action that ensure that X happens. Such people have integrity. They sustain their commitment to the end. God is reported to have said, "Let there be light," and immediately there was light. In the case of humans, it takes time for commitment to unfold, but the principle is the same. For example, we say, ‘Let there be peace on earth.' If the majority of us have true integrity, with which we are prepared to take sustained action, peace will surely prevail on earth."

Why Try Parent Coaching?

by Gloria DeGaetano,
Founder and CEO, Parent Coaching Institute

Recently a 35 year-old working mom told me, "I'll take process over problem-solving any day!" Meg had found out that parent coaching actually solves problems by not working on them. It's paradoxical, but true. By paying more attention to the actual process of discovery of what works and by holding the vision of our goal or preferred future, we not only solve identified problems, we attract more good into our lives than we ever thought possible. During the course of the coaching relationship, the changes that occur come from deep within—accompanied by many pleasant surprises!

PCI parent coaching, unlike problem-solving, is truly a transformational process. In their book, How the Way We Talk Can Change the Way We Work: Seven Languages for Transformation, (Jossey-Bass, 2001), Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow point out, "When we solve a problem quickly the one thing we can usually be certain of is that we ourselves are the same people coming out of the problem as we were going into it." (p. 43) Coaching, however changes us in fundamental ways. The shared relationship between the parent and coach produce regularly-occurring miracles. Actually these "miracles" are the natural outcome of coach and client working together in a type of sacred zone, synergistically moving forward, together delighted and often surprised, about how problems get "solved."

New Study Supports the Hypothesis That Organophosphate Exposure May Contribute to ADHD Prevalence
A new study published in the May issue of the AAP's Pediatrics journal supports the hypothesis that organophosphate (pesticide) exposure, in levels common among U.S. children, may contribute to ADHD prevalence in children ages 8 to 15 years. Prospective studies are needed to establish whether this association is causal. You may read the study abstract or download the full study. Article on Texting Provides Realistic Tips for Parents
Doris Bowman, PCI Certified Parent Coach® near Portland, Oregon, was quoted in the article "Tips for setting limits on tween and teen texting" in The Oregonian. Regarding texting, Bowman said, "What parents have to understand is that when children are constantly engaged in electronics, the external world becomes a stronger force than the inner world of their child. We know as children move into their teens, that is prevalent anyway, but I think electronics is causing it to happen at a younger age so that when they are home their focus is outside the home."
